When my son Conner was 16 years old, he left for a homecoming dance and never came back. He accepted a ride from another unlicensed student who took off driving 70 mph in his BMW, lost control and hit a tree, flipping the car. All three passengers were killed. I lost my son in an instant.
We have the technology to prevent reckless drivers from causing tragedies like the one that devastated my family. Help us pass laws to get states to use it.
Conner was a bright, talented soccer player already being scouted by colleges. I often wonder if he might still be here today if the teenage driver that night hadn't been so reckless, hadn't been driving such a high-performance car, or had even been properly licensed.
These questions haunt me daily. That's why I am campaigning to pass state bills that will require anti-speeding technology called intelligent speed assistance (ISA) in the vehicles of the most reckless drivers who flout the law and continue to be a danger on our roadways. While bills like these would only apply to a small percentage of overall drivers, studies indicate that its impact would be powerful. "Super speeders" are involved in a hugely disproportionate number of serious crashes.
ISA technology has been in use for over 30 years in commercial fleets and is increasingly being adopted for teen drivers. It can prevent dangerous chronic speeders from exceeding speed limits and provides an opportunity for them to change their unsafe driving habits.
Join our campaign to push states like Virginia, New York, Maryland, Washington, California and others to require the most reckless drivers to use intelligent speed assistance.
The District of Columbia has already passed legislation requiring speed-limiting devices for drivers with speeding-related license suspensions.
It's too late to save Conner. But it's not too late to save other families from this pain. Please join me in making us all safe from the dangers of reckless driving.
