As a Tibetan-American, I feel strongly that the relationship between the U.S. president and His Holiness the Dalai Lama is a symbol of the U.S.'s moral leadership in the world. I was greatly encouraged when, in September 2020, Joe Biden said that he would "meet with His Holiness the Dalai Lama."
Since 1991, every sitting U.S. president has met with the Dalai Lama, with the exception of Donald Trump, whose tenure coincided with the Covid-19 pandemic. This includes Presidents George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. The tradition has not only become symbolic of America's principled commitment to human rights, democracy, and freedom of religion, but also sends a strong message of solidarity to Tibetans in Tibet and around the world, as well as to Tibetan-Americans and the millions of Buddhists in the U.S. today.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama has led the Tibetan people in a 70-year David vs. Goliath nonviolent struggle for basic rights and freedom. He has been an apostle of peace and an advocate for democracy throughout the world. His teachings on compassion have touched countless millions and have contributed significantly to world peace and interfaith harmony. At a time of regional wars and violent conflicts around the globe, and liberal democracy being threatened globally, a meeting between the U.S. President and the Dalai Lama would be a landmark event to underscore the critical importance of peace, democracy, and compassion throughout our world.
I therefore urge President Biden to arrange a meeting with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Your support could encourage this historic meeting and maintain this important tradition. Sign the petition, lend your voice, and support this cause.
