Hard-working immigrants say this tax is unfair

Mary — Republican members of Congress are trying to pass a provision that millions of immigrants find deeply unfair, and potentially harmful to America as a whole. The proposed law would tax "remittances," money sent overseas often to family members struggling to make ends meet. Omar, an immigrant living in the US, says: "By helping our families meet basic needs at home, we give them the chance to stay rooted in their communities, making them far less likely to undertake the dangerous journey north."

Omar's petition is gaining international attention after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum mentioned it in a press conference. Add your voice and sign Omar's petition.

Dear Senators,

We are immigrant families, workers, and members of communities who live in the United States. Many of us came here out of necessity, not choice. We work hard and contribute to the American economy every single day in essential sectors such as agriculture, construction, and caregiving. A large share of us is here legally, whether through H-2A temporary work visas, green cards or other lawful pathways.

We write to urge you to reject Section 112105 of the "One Big Beautiful Bill," which proposes a harmful 3.5% tax on the remittances we send to support our families in Mexico. These are not luxury transfers. They are modest amounts used to cover food, medicine, and shelter. Taxing them would punish those who are already struggling the most.

It is important to note that remittances play a quiet but powerful role in reducing irregular migration. By helping our families meet basic needs at home, we give them the chance to stay rooted in their communities, making them far less likely to undertake the dangerous journey north. Remittances also often go to households in greatest need, many of them led by women who heavily rely on this support. A tax would hit these families the hardest, pushing them deeper into poverty and widening existing gender gaps.

Furthermore, this tax would amount to double taxation. We already contribute over $120 billion annually in U.S. taxes, and this new measure would force us to pay again just for helping our loved ones. It's unfair, and it violates the longstanding bilateral tax treaty between the United States and Mexico, which was created precisely to prevent individuals from being taxed twice on the same income.

We don't seek special treatment, only equal and fair consideration.

Respectfully,

Millions of hardworking immigrants and their families
