Greg Fenves,
We, the undersigned, write this today with a deep sense of disappointment and frustration regarding your continued failure to adequately support and advocate for BIPOC, Arab, and Muslim students on our Emory campus. It is with great urgency that we, the undersigned, demand your resignation from the position of University President due to your persistent neglect and dismissal of the concerns and experiences of marginalized communities within our institution.
Your silence and lack of solidarity towards those affected by the reprehensible actions of the Israel Occupation Force have been deafening. Despite repeated calls for support and acknowledgement from the affected communities, you have chosen to remain silent, effectively silencing their voices on campus. Your failure to address these issues perpetuates a hostile environment for BIPOC, Arab, and Muslim students, faculty, and staff, and it is simply unacceptable.
Furthermore, your pattern of misconstruing events on campus to suit your own agenda is deeply troubling. In your most recent communication, you advocated for compassion and sound judgment, yet your subsequent actions directly contradicted these principles. By calling upon the Atlanta Police Department and the Georgia State Patrol to escalate the peaceful encampment on campus, you orchestrated a situation of horror for our Black and Brown students, faculty, and staff.
The actions of the Atlanta PD and Georgia SP, under your direction, resulted in the targeting, tear-gassing, rubber bullet shootings, and wrongful arrests of individuals who were peacefully exercising their right to protest. Instead of upholding the values of compassion and justice, you actively participated in the suppression of dissent and the perpetuation of violence against marginalized communities.
As members of the university community, we expect our leaders to demonstrate integrity, empathy, and a commitment to justice. Your failure to meet these expectations has caused irreparable harm to our campus community and eroded trust in your leadership. It is clear that you are no longer fit to serve as the President of our university.
Therefore, we demand you to tender your resignation immediately to allow for the appointment of a leader who is truly dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all members of our community. Anything less would be a disservice to the values and mission of our institution.
- The Emory Community
