On July 6th, 2024, an innocent woman, Sonya Massey, tragically lost her life in Sangamon County, IL. Deputy Sean P Grayson, an officer with a known criminal history, was hired by Sheriff Jack Campbell. This hiring directly led to this irreparable loss. Such a tragedy presents an essential question - why was an officer with a criminal background hired by our Sheriff's Department?
This instance is not just personal; it's a glaring indication of systemic issues within our local law enforcement's hiring practices, which demand immediate rectification. It is utterly unacceptable for the county's Sheriff Department to compromise community safety by employing individuals with dubious records. For this reason, we are requesting a comprehensive investigation into the hiring practices employed by the Sangamon County Sheriff's Department.
Furthermore, we demand that Sheriff Jack Campbell step down from his position. The responsibility for this reckless hiring decision ultimately rests on his shoulders. His resignation is crucial to restore faith in our local law enforcement and ensure that competent and law-abiding individuals are placed in positions to protect and serve our community.
We, the citizens of Sangamon County, call on the Sangamon County Board to take swift action. We want honesty, transparency, and a commitment to prioritize our safety and welfare above everything else.
Please sign this petition and send a clear message: We will not stand for reckless hiring practices that endanger the lives of our fellow citizens.
