Gisèle Pelicot

Mary — Gisèle Pelicot has made headlines around the world for months, as she waived her right to anonymity during the trial of her husband and the 50 other men who raped her. She has been quoted as saying: "I wanted all of society to be a witness to the debates that took place here… I now have confidence in our capacity to find a better future where everyone, women and men alike, can live in harmony with respect and mutual understanding." Catherine is urging the Nobel Committee to consider Gisèle Pelicot as a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize. You can show your support by signing Catherine's petition.

It is hard to think of any form of violence that poses a greater challenge to peace than sexual violence. It is gendered and endemic. Deployed as a weapon of war, it also defaces what passes for peace every minute of every day in every part of the world. The majority of women experience sexual violence in their lifetimes. The US Centers for Disease Control estimates that one in four women and one in 26 men will be subjected to rape or attempted rape. The majority of victims and survivors know their attackers. This truth has been written large in the trial and conviction of Gisèle Pelicot's husband and the 50 other men who raped her.

This cannot go on and yet it does, victims blamed instead of supported, judicial systems overwhelmed or inadequate, support services lacking and the media often perpetuating damaging myths and stereotypes rather than challenging them. Nowhere do politicians consistently treat sexual violence as a top priority, even though some pay lip service.

Gisèle Pelicot cut through the smog of misinformation in waiving her anonymity to attend the trial of her attackers and give testimony. After sentences were handed down, she said "I want you to know that we share the same fight. When I opened the doors to this trial ... I wanted all of society to be a witness to the debates that took place here … I now have confidence in our capacity to find a better future where everyone, women and men alike, can live in harmony with respect and mutual understanding."

Nobody deserves the Nobel Peace Prize more than Pelicot. Now is the time to make sure the Nobel Committee and those few people permitted to make nominations take action.
