We, the undersigned, stand in unwavering support of Harvard University's principled refusal to comply with the Trump Administration's unlawful and deeply troubling demands.
On April 14, 2025, Harvard took a bold and necessary stand against federal overreach. The Trump Administration had issued sweeping mandates that would have forced the university to:
- Report international students to federal authorities for campus conduct violations
- Surrender control over admissions, hiring, and academic programming
- Dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
- Provide private data on students and faculty for politically motivated scrutiny
- Submit to federal audits and censorship under the guise of "viewpoint diversity"
These demands are not only unprecedented—they are unconstitutional. They threaten the very foundation of higher education in a free society: the right to pursue knowledge, foster debate, and uphold independent academic judgment, free from government control.
As President Alan Garber of Harvard stated, "The university will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights." We could not agree more.
This is not just about Harvard. This is about protecting every university's right to determine its own policies, priorities, and principles without fear of political retribution. If we allow the federal government to dictate how universities operate, whom they admit, and what they teach, we undermine the fabric of academic freedom that has made American higher education a global leader.
We call on other universities, educators, students, alumni, and citizens to join us in standing with Harvard. We urge Congress and the courts to scrutinize and reject the Trump Administration's abuses of power. And we demand that all institutions of higher learning be allowed to operate without unlawful interference or coercion.
Academic freedom is not up for negotiation.
Institutional autonomy is not a partisan issue.
We stand with Harvard.
