On February 19, 2025, William McNeil Jr., a black driver in Jacksonville, was violently assaulted during a routine traffic stop by officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO). Although he calmly questioned the legitimacy of the stop and requested a supervisor, officers shattered his window and punched him in the face while his hands were visible and raised. McNeil was left with a concussion, chipped teeth, stitches, and memory loss. This wasn't an isolated "misunderstanding"—it was a public example of the unchecked, racially biased violence that residents of Jacksonville, especially POC community members, fear every day.
If this behavior is tolerated, JSO will continue operating as a department above the law. Sheriff T.K. Waters' response has been reactive and dismissive, launching an internal review only after public outrage exploded online. Without real accountability, Jacksonville's policing culture will remain broken—protecting abusive officers instead of protecting the people. Failing to act now means giving a green light to police brutality, dishonesty, and institutional corruption.
The truth is clear: the public only saw justice begin to move after the video went viral. That is not justice—it's damage control. We can no longer let internal reviews and PR statements replace meaningful action. The officers involved must be fired. Sheriff Waters must resign or be removed. And the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office must be rebuilt with real transparency, civilian oversight, and deep policy reform. We cannot let this moment pass. Sign now to demand immediate change—for William McNeil, for our communities, and for the future of public safety in Jacksonville.
