Mary,
Since its debut, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has been more than just a funny late-night show. Its honest, witty takes on politics and culture made it a rare voice in mainstream media, which is why it's been the most-watched late-night show for years. Paramount's decision to cancel it wasn't just a business decision, it was a political one.
Colbert has given us truth and laughter. Let's give him our support.
For me, as a Ukrainian American, Stephen Colbert's show means more than just entertainment. He has been an outspoken advocate against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. While my country has faced war, displacement, and information attacks from Putin's propaganda, I've turned to Colbert for comfort and solidarity.
This is exactly what is happening to The Late Show. When honest commentary becomes inconvenient for people in power, they tend to censor it. This sends a chilling message that truth can be punished and voices silenced for challenging the wrong people. As history has proven time and time again, censorship of dissent is the first step towards tyranny.
My family and friends have experienced the price of speaking out. In 1937, my step-great-grandfather was killed under Stalin for writing satirical comedies critical of the Soviet nomenclatura. In 2022, a conductor we used to know in Ukraine was shot by Russian occupiers for refusing to produce a propaganda concert. Imagine being punished, or even killed, for raising your voice.
Stephen Colbert has been a constant in late-night television for nearly 20 years. He has earned 44 Emmy nominations, won 10 of them, and been the most-watched late-night TV comedian for years. CBS's choice to cancel the show makes no sense.
Canceling The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would not just mark the end of a television program, but the beginning of a dangerous precedent of free speech suppression in the media. This show has been an irreplaceable part of our culture and a nightly space for reflection, laughter, and connection. We cannot afford to lose it.
Sign now to keep Colbert on the air.
Andrew
